Interested in learning an instrument? Or introducing your child to music?
Mordechai Gordon has a dynamic, enjoyable approach to learning the following instruments:
Piano or Keyboard
Acoustic or classical guitar
Harmonica
Mandolin
Flutes (recorder, side blown silver/wood flute, irish whistle).
Philosophy - Everyone has their own music waiting to come out ...
I firmly believe that everyone can play music on some level. Unfortunately not everyone is given the opportunity to discover which instrument helps them sing. I commit to facilitating the students search for their voice in music - even if the conclusion we draw is not an instrument that I teach.
No two students learn in the same way. I am not married to a book even though sometimes I will recommend using one. I have a standard system but if I see that a student is progressing faster or slower I will adjust for him, sometimes even changing the area of music or performance that we are working on according to his needs.
If you don't enjoy it, there's no chance! I believe that music making should be enjoyable from the start - a beginner playing "Mary had a little lamb" for the first time gets a kick out of it just like Murray Perahia gets a kick out of playing a Bach 4-part fugue for the first time. I usually accompany my students on another instrument which gives them a feeling of playing music rather than just another exercise.
You don't have to sign you life away to music (although that's preferable!), 10- 15 minutes every day is adequate at the beginning. The important part is "every day" - consistency is the key. 10 minutes a day is worth much more than 60 minutes just before the lesson!
Option at the end of a year/six months: Make your own disc!
Outstanding students have the opportunity to work on a piece of music and I will record it with a specially prepared backing track when they are ready on a portable studio set up that I have. I will then add professional effects and burn a disc for the student to keep.
